A Bas
relief from old Monticello High School is approximately 6 feet
high and 10 feet wide
and was built into the wall of the third floor of the building when it
was built in the 1880s. The bas relief was discovered as the building
was
scheduled for demolition.
With the assistance of the Iowa Historic Commission and many others
this
historic relief was removed from the building before demolition. The
relief was sent to Des Moines where the Iowa Historic Commission
restored it.
The Bas relief is currently on loan the the Iowa Historic Museum and
displayed
as part of the Color of the Flags exhibit. The relief will be in Des
Moines
for five years and then return to Monticello.
The Hale Bridge is a 296 foot
three span bow string bridge which crossed the Wapsipinicon
river south of the village of Hale, Iowa.
The three spans were removed from the river just before the new bridge
was built in the same location. Two of the spans are located on the
north
side of the river while the other span is stored on the south side of
the river while repairs are made before relocating the entire bridge
again over the
wapsipinicon river. The new location will be in the Iowa Wapsipinicon
State
park just outside of Anamosa Iowa.
